The country will now hold a repeat election, while the current president Klaus Iohannis will remain in office until a new head of state is elected.

The court's ruling was a response to declassified data indicating "hybrid attacks" during the electoral process from the terrorist state. In this context, Romania's Supreme Security Council confirmed that the country faced numerous cyberattacks and interference on electoral platforms. Specifically, 85,000 cyberattacks were directed at exploiting vulnerabilities in the voting system.

At the center of the scandal is the far-right candidate Călin Georgescu, who won the first round of the elections, despite polls predicting significantly lower chances for him before the vote. Georgescu actively utilized TikTok during his campaign, which garnered him substantial support on social media, but suspicions now arise regarding illegal financing of his campaign and external interference.

Following the court's decision, President Klaus Iohannis promised to conduct an investigation and form a new government to ensure the organization of repeat elections. He emphasized that Romania remains a stable country with a reliable economy capable of ensuring safety for its citizens.
