The parent company of Google, Alphabet, is already facing regulatory pressure and is seeking to influence public opinion and policy regarding artificial intelligence ahead of an impending global wave of regulation for this technology.

According to Reuters, in September, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced the establishment of a $120 million investment fund to develop educational programs focused on AI.

“Expanding knowledge about artificial intelligence among individuals, organizations, and governments, along with the active use of AI tools, fosters the creation of more effective policies in this area and opens up new opportunities — it is a mutually beneficial process,” stated Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs at Alphabet.

In competition with tech giants like OpenAI (backed by Microsoft) and Meta, Google is also mindful of the stringent regulatory scrutiny that is already impacting its advertising and search business.

According to Reuters, in the EU, Google has proposed selling part of its advertising division to appease regulators. In the U.S., the Department of Justice is attempting to compel the company to divest the Chrome web browser, although this course may change under new administration.

Meanwhile, governments around the world are developing new regulations addressing issues that are becoming more pressing due to the advancement of AI, such as copyright protection and data privacy.
