The official unemployment rate in Ukraine has significantly decreased over the past year, reaching a historical low.
According to the State Employment Service, in December 2024, the number of registered unemployed individuals amounted to 94.2 thousand, of which 75.8 thousand were women. In comparison, a year ago this figure was 96.1 thousand.
The demand from employers for employees to fill vacant positions in December 2024 was 46.7 thousand, which is 14.3 thousand more compared to the previous year (32.4 thousand).
Forecast for unemployment by the NBU:
However, despite the decrease in the unemployment rate, it will remain higher than the levels seen before the full-scale war began. This is due to long-lasting disparities in the labor market, including a limited supply of skilled labor, the impact of the war's consequences, and difficulties in reintegrating demobilized individuals.
It is also worth noting that in 2023, the official unemployment rate in Ukraine was halved. In December 2023, 96.1 thousand unemployed were registered, compared to 186.5 thousand at the end of 2022.
Starting from January 1, 2025, the maximum unemployment benefit will amount to 8,000 hryvnias, which is equivalent to the minimum wage. In wartime conditions, the duration of unemployment benefit payments cannot exceed 90 calendar days.
