For the first time in history, the European Union generated more energy from solar panels than from coal power plants. According to the Ember analytics center, in 2024, solar energy accounted for 11.1% of the EU's electricity (304 TWh), surpassing coal, which contributed 269 TWh.
"Solar panels have become a key element in reducing the use of fossil energy sources in 2024," the report notes. The growth of solar energy has affected all countries in the European Union.
Wind and solar sources accounted for 29% of electricity demand in the EU, gas made up 15.7%, and coal contributed 9.8%. Nuclear energy represented 23.7% of total production, while hydropower accounted for 13.2%. In 2024, the share of renewable sources reached 47%.
