Greenland has once again emphasized that it is not for sale, following remarks by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump expressing his desire to bring the territory under American control. Denmark, for its part, has yet to respond to the American politician's comments, according to the BBC.
"Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland," the island's Prime Minister stated in response to Trump's repeated comments about the strategically important Arctic territory, which he first made several years ago.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, holds significant strategic importance for the U.S., as it hosts a major facility of American space infrastructure and is situated on the shortest route between the U.S. and Europe.
According to the publication, Donald Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social: "For national security and the promotion of freedom worldwide, the United States considers ownership and control of Greenland an absolute necessity."
These statements prompted a strong reaction from Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede. He stated: "Greenland is not for sale and will never be sold."
The Prime Minister also emphasized: "We cannot allow our long struggle for freedom to be in vain, but must continue to openly collaborate and trade with the entire world, especially with neighboring countries."
Additionally, on Sunday, Trump commented on the possibility of restoring American control over the Panama Canal, calling it a key waterway and accusing Panama of overcharging for its use. The President of Panama responded by stating that "every square meter" of the canal and its surrounding areas belongs exclusively to his country.
