U.S. President Donald Trump has decided to extend sanctions against Russia for at least another year. This is confirmed by a document in the Federal Register, indicating that the sanctions, first imposed in 2014 following the annexation of Crimea and the occupation of parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, will remain in effect.
Since the signing of the initial Executive Order No. 13660, the restrictions have been repeatedly tightened as Russia continued its aggressive actions.
The document notes that Moscow's policies still pose an "extraordinary threat" to U.S. national security. As a result, the sanctions will be extended beyond March 6, 2025.
"In accordance with the National Emergencies Act, I am extending for one year the state of emergency declared in Executive Order No. 13660," the statement reads.
The official publication of the order is expected on February 28.
