"Experimental" Russian ballistic missile launched at the city of Dnipro had multiple warheads. This marks the first use of such a weapon in the war. CNN reports this, citing two American officials and one Western official, as noted by UNN.
Details
It is highlighted that this type of missile is known as a Multiple Independently-targetable Reentry Vehicle (MIRV), which carries a series of warheads, each capable of targeting its own objective, allowing one ballistic missile to conduct a large-scale attack against multiple targets.
MIRVs were developed during the Cold War to deliver several nuclear warheads in a single launch.
The United States also possesses this type of missile - the Minuteman III, an intercontinental ballistic missile equipped with MIRV technology.
According to the publication, the Russian missile that struck Dnipro was not armed with nuclear warheads but is designed for delivering nuclear weapons rather than conventional munitions.
On Thursday, Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh stated that this was the first use of an experimental medium-range ballistic missile "based on" the Russian RS-26 Rubezh missile model, although Singh did not specify the exact type of missile or its capabilities.
Tom Karako, director of the missile defense project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), remarked that this is the first time MIRVs have been used in combat.
Reminder
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has documented Putin's statement regarding the use of a medium-range ballistic missile against Ukraine. These statements will be used as evidence of the crime of aggression to hold him accountable.
