Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov, who admitted to the falsehood of his testimony regarding President Joe Biden, his son Hunter, and their connections to the Ukrainian company Burisma, has been sentenced to 6 years in prison. The court granted the prosecutors' request for such a sentence.
According to Reuters, in December 2023, Smirnov acknowledged that he had provided false testimony to the FBI, claiming he had information about a $5 million bribe allegedly received by the Bidens from the executives of Burisma Holdings, where Hunter Biden served on the board. Additionally, Smirnov pleaded guilty to tax evasion.
Prosecutors noted that in 2020, Smirnov used his position at the FBI to disseminate false information about a presidential candidate in an effort to influence the elections. The defense sought a lighter sentence of 4 years in prison, citing Smirnov's admission of guilt and his "personal downfall" following the scandal that erupted.
The saga began in February 2024 when Smirnov was accused of providing false testimony to an FBI supervisor regarding a bribe to the Bidens from Burisma. This testimony was utilized by Republicans in the House of Representatives to support the theory of Biden's corruption, which became the basis for attempts to impeach him. A report on this case was published in August 2024, but a vote on impeachment never took place.
