The first laboratory-confirmed case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been identified in Kyiv. This was reported by the Kyiv City Center for Disease Control and Prevention under the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

This type of virus, according to specialists, is not new to Ukrainians and is already well-known globally. It was first discovered and described in 2001 in the Netherlands.

In the current and past epidemic seasons, there have been no recorded fatalities due to infections caused by the metapneumovirus. Meanwhile, statistics indicate that the incidence rates are significantly lower compared to previous years of observation.

Doctors state that the metapneumovirus will not trigger a pandemic, as its symptoms resemble those of influenza or acute respiratory viral infections: fever, cough, runny nose, weakness, and muscle and joint pain.

"Severe cases are possible among children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems," explains virologist and professor Alla Mironenko.

Effective preventive measures include regular handwashing with soap, avoiding contact with sick individuals, following cough etiquette, and ventilating rooms.

It is worth noting that the World Health Organization has made similar statements. The human metapneumovirus currently does not pose a serious threat.

Ukrainian physician Taras Zhiravetsky previously discussed the inability to diagnose this infection in Ukraine. According to him, reagents specifically for human metapneumovirus HMPV are needed.
