On January 9, the Verkhovna Rada approved a series of amendments to the law of Ukraine "On Military Registration and Military Service" and organized basic military training (BMT) for women. A total of 298 members of parliament supported bill No. 1276 in its entirety. Regarding the changes in the registration of women and youth starting from 18 years old, MP Oleksiy Honcharenko of the "European Solidarity" party wrote on his Telegram channel.
Honcharenko explained that Ukrainian women are now allowed to undergo military training without being subject to mobilization. In particular, the deputies backed his amendment, which provided this opportunity. The politician emphasized that women will be able to voluntarily register and undergo BMT.
"This is a very important bill. And once again! There will be no mobilization of women!" — he wrote.
The comparative table of bill №12076, submitted to the Rada for the second reading, outlines the following proposals from the deputies:
The previous version of the document stated that women would indeed be discharged from service after BMT, but in return, they could be assigned to the military operational reserve (in accordance with paragraph 11 of Article 26 of the Military Registration law).
Furthermore, the MP discussed other changes introduced by the passed bill. Among other things, young men who are abroad and must register for military service now have the opportunity to do so without returning to Ukraine.
It should be noted that MP Oleksandr Fedienko previously commented on the mobilization of women and military training. He explained that women should indeed register to participate in training courses, such as shooting courses at training centers. However, after completing the training, according to the deputies' proposal, they could decide whether to remain registered and be subject to mobilization. The politician noted that women have retained the right to voluntarily choose whether to join the army.
We remind you that on January 9, MP Fedienko explained what would happen to men who lose their mobilization exemption on February 28.
