Due to the worsening weather conditions, the question arises on how to avoid freezing and protect oneself from the cold. The Center for Public Health under the Ministry of Health of Ukraine has shared simple rules to help retain warmth during the winter.
The Center noted that it is advisable to dress in layers, "like a cabbage." It's best to choose clothing made from natural or specialized materials.
The "right" winter clothing should consist of three layers:
The center emphasized that the more layers a person wears when going outside, the warmer they will be. However, the clothing does not need to be bulky or restrict movement. The key rule is layering and spaciousness, allowing air pockets to form between the layers, which will help retain heat.
Additionally, it is important to keep extremities and the head covered, as a significant amount of heat can be lost through these areas. Moreover, cold air can make hair dull and brittle.
When selecting winter footwear, it's best to choose shoes with a thick sole. They should be roomy, perfectly sized, and not constrict the feet to ensure proper blood circulation.
While waiting for the bus or a green light at the traffic signal, it’s advisable not to stand still. It’s better to keep moving: jump in place, walk around, do a few simple exercises, or even hug someone if possible. Movement will help boost circulation, meaning you won’t get cold.
Before heading outside, it’s best to eat nutritious and healthy warm food. The body requires more energy to maintain a normal temperature in winter, so it’s essential to replenish it more frequently.
Avoid wearing metal jewelry. Metal cools down very quickly, and contact with the skin can lead to frostbite in certain areas or cold injuries. Additionally, rings can slow down blood flow in the fingers, making them freeze faster.
"Bring a thermos with tea. If you are heading out for several hours in the cold, drink hot tea and keep moving to stay warm," the Center added.
