Bags of wheat, which two pranksters generously scattered during Christmas, sparked outrage among some Ukrainians. Meanwhile, others were only concerned about who would clean it up and how much time it would take.

Two residents of Volyn congratulated their acquaintances on Christmas by coming to celebrate with two bags of grain. In a video recorded by the hosts, they showed the hallway covered with wheat almost up to the ankles. Ukrainians reacted in various ways upon seeing the footage. Some commentators expressed outrage and criticism, while others stated that it was a tradition and that people were simply having fun. This unexpected custom on Christmas drew significant attention online, as shown in a video published on TikTok.

The video featuring the Christmas generous act surfaced online around January 3, 2025. The 19-second clip was shared by a user with the nickname patibusss. It can be seen that the events are taking place in a private home, as indicated, in Volyn. At one point, a door opens, and a young man appears with a bag over his shoulder. He then suddenly swings it and spills the contents onto the floor: grain covers the hallway under the feet of the operator and the guest. Following this, another person enters and does the same—scattering wheat. Laughter can be heard as people wish each other Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

"I sow, I sow, I celebrate, I congratulate you on the New Year. May rye and wheat grow," one of the celebrators shouts.

Christmas Scandal — Reactions from Ukrainians

The video of the celebration, where two bags of grain were poured onto the floor, gathered nearly 2,500 comments within three days. Some commentators recalled the hardships faced during the Holodomor, arguing that one should not joke about such significant matters. Others noted that bread and wheat are not something to be treated disrespectfully.

"How can you mock grain! People, remember the Holodomor! You can't treat grain like that; it's bread," comments read.

Others, however, pointed out different aspects. Some wondered who would clean up the spilled grain in the hallway, suggesting that the jokers should be tasked with it. Others insisted that there was nothing wrong with the men's actions. On one hand, they recalled that this is a local custom. On the other, they noted that the wheat would not go to waste—it could be fed to livestock, for instance. They also explained that typically, celebrators bring a smaller amount of grain. Someone shared a story about how, during a similar ritual, a dead mouse fell out of a bucket.

"1. It can be cleaned up in 10-15 minutes. 2. The grain will go to livestock, birds, or even for planting. 3. What difference does it make to you? Why are you so angry? The hosts are happy, and that's what matters," remarked one commentator.

Скандал на Рождество, комментарии о зерне, мешки зерна Рождество

It’s worth noting that before the New Year festivities, another Christmas scandal arose online involving singer Katya Chilly. The singer stated on Facebook that she did not want to see the Jewish symbol—the Hanukkiah, which was lit in the central squares of Kyiv, Lviv, and several other cities. Ukrainians reacted in mixed ways: some supported the speaker and emphasized the importance of Ukrainian symbols, while others criticized her, highlighting that Jews are also part of the Ukrainian nation.

Recall that in Peru, there was an incident involving a local mayor who dressed up as Santa Claus and rode to the central square on a sleigh pulled by reindeer during Christmas.
