This year, several airports in Ukraine may reopen. This was announced by the mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi, to "Your City."
The official did not specify which aerodromes he was referring to, but noted that there are already technical capabilities for their operation.
"It is certain that this year several airports in Ukraine will start operating. There are technical and other possibilities for this. A political decision is needed. Apparently, it will be made," he believes.
Sadovyi explained that when a country is present on the aviation map, it is essentially on the world map as well.
He cited Israel as an example, where a political decision was made to keep Tel Aviv airport operational during the war. "Ben Gurion" became the only bridge connecting the country to the world.
"The world has already experienced this. We have no other option; we must survive and live in wartime," Andriy Sadovyi emphasized.
It is worth noting that on January 13, Lviv International Airport named after Danylo Halytskyy summarized its operations during the war, stating that the airport staff maintains the necessary level of qualification and will ensure quality service for a limited number of flights once operations resume.
"We are exploring the possibility of opening civil aviation flights during martial law, provided all safety requirements for aircraft, passengers, and infrastructure are met," the statement said.
The hope that air traffic will resume in Lviv was expressed by the city’s mayor as early as 2023. He mentioned that specialists from Israel examined the potential to open "Lviv" and "Boryspil" airports and declared that air traffic should be established immediately to avoid losing it.
At the same time, aviation expert Valeriy Romanenko noted that a ballistic missile could reach Boryspil airport in a matter of minutes. And without a complete closure of Ukrainian airspace, air carriers will not even receive the insurance policy necessary for their operations.
