Western countries are delaying Ukraine's NATO membership, and this process will take many more years. Meanwhile, partners are not providing the weapons and missiles needed to protect Ukrainians from new attacks by the Russian Federation. In this situation, nuclear weapons should have been a guarantee of Ukraine's security. President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed his conversations with Western partners and nuclear weapons during an interview with American journalist Piers Morgan.
Morgan published a two-minute excerpt of the conversation, in which the Ukrainian president spoke about nuclear weapons. In this excerpt, Zelensky acknowledged that joining NATO is not a quick process and will stretch over decades. In this context, he rhetorically asked partners how Ukraine can defend itself from evil while the membership process continues. According to the politician, in such a case, it is worth discussing nuclear weapons and missiles that could protect Ukrainians from Russian nuclear weapons and missiles.
"Then let them give us nuclear weapons, or provide us with enough missiles to stop Russia," he is heard saying in the video.
Zelensky stated that the West should return nuclear warheads to Ukraine, provide missile systems, strengthen the Ukrainian army, and send a Western military contingent "to those parts of our country where we want a stable situation."
On the other hand, the president of Ukraine recalled Vladimir Putin's statements, who claimed that he began the invasion out of fear of NATO. Zelensky noted that NATO is not in Ukraine, so there is no need to fear, yet for some reason, the Kremlin does not withdraw its troops.
"Because there should be logic. He invaded because he was afraid we would become members. Well, we are not members. Get off our land," he said.
The rest of the interview, as well as the context in which the Ukrainian president's phrase was uttered, will appear on YouTube at 20:00 (UK) / 15:00 (EST) (22:00 in Kyiv), Morgan reported.
It is noteworthy that in the fall of 2024, media outlets reported on the possible restoration of Ukraine's nuclear arsenal. In particular, The Times spoke with scientists who mentioned that the smallest warhead could be created within a few months. However, the Ukrainian government assured that it is not doing anything in this direction and does not plan to do so.
We remind you that on January 28, the American magazine Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists indicated that the hands of the "Doomsday Clock" are getting closer to midnight.
