With the arrival of autumn in Ukraine, it has started to get dark earlier, and towns are experiencing interruptions in electricity supply due to shelling or bad weather. Additionally, power outages are possible during the winter months. Under these circumstances, it is essential to follow a few simple rules to avoid dangers outside. The relevant guidelines were published by the press service of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine on October 17.
The SES emphasized that in the dark, drivers may easily overlook pedestrians, while pedestrians may not see vehicles. Rescuers urged Ukrainians to ensure the safety of children by explaining several simple rules that can save lives.
The first crucial point to understand is that a person in dark clothing is nearly invisible. When going outside, it is advisable to wear light-colored outerwear, and even better—attach reflective elements to it.
A child dressed in dark clothing will only be visible from 10 meters away in the dark. However, if they wear light clothing, that distance increases to 40 meters. Adding reflective elements to light clothing allows a driver to spot a child from as far away as 150 meters.
Moreover, it is important to explain to the child how to move safely. Walking down a dark street is safer with a flashlight turned on.
0If crossing the road is necessary, it is best to wait for others to cross in a group.
1The SES urged people not to dash across the road during nighttime. Crossing to the other side of the street should only be done at pedestrian crossings.
2Additionally, the Patrol Police have requested drivers to check their vehicles and tap the hood before starting the engine.
Forecaster Natalia Didenko has predicted a drop in temperature over the weekend and the first frosts in Kyiv. The expert also mentioned when warmer weather will return to Ukraine.
