In Ukraine, there are currently 13 confirmed cases of metapneumovirus infection, although the actual number of infected individuals may be significantly higher. This was reported by epidemiologist Olga Golubovskaya on her Facebook page.
According to the doctor, transmission occurs via respiratory droplets, with an incubation period ranging from 3 to 6 days, and the duration of the illness does not exceed ten days. At the same time, Ms. Golubovskaya states that there are typically two forms of the disease — mild (with a runny nose and cough) and severe, which can lead to serious respiratory failure.
The specialist indicates that the most active period for the virus is late winter and spring. Additionally, to confirm the diagnosis, patients need to undergo testing to identify this illness. Radiological changes in the lungs may include signs such as "ground-glass opacities," atelectasis, and hyperinflation.
Ms. Golubovskaya adds that there is no need to panic, but rather to follow the treatment protocol. In case of infection, she advises limiting contact with sick individuals, washing hands regularly, ventilating rooms, and avoiding crowded events. It is also essential for at-risk individuals to monitor their health — managing chronic diseases and taking vitamins (particularly vitamin D) as prescribed by a specialist.
The doctor states that if the first symptoms appear — runny nose, cough, shortness of breath — it is necessary to consult a specialist. In cases of deteriorating condition, the specialist advises patients not to delay and to agree to hospitalization.
"A request to doctors — do not hesitate with hospitalization if the patient is progressing daily. Remember that the severity of the condition is assessed not only by temperature readings but also by the overall state of the patient, especially in at-risk groups. It is believed that co-infections with other viruses or bacteria can trigger a severe course of the disease, so the use of empirical antiviral therapy with broad-spectrum agents may be justified," urged Golubovskaya.
Later, it became known that metapneumovirus has already been detected in Kazakhstan. The local government reported 30 cases, while the Ministry of Health stated that this virus is "classic" for the epidemic season.
