Ukraine has halted the transit of Russian gas.

On the morning of January 1st, Ukraine halted the transit of Russian gas. The gas transportation system is now operating without any transit activities.
Украина остановила транзит газа из России.

This was reported by the Operator of the Gas Transmission System of Ukraine.

"At 7 AM Kyiv time on January 1, 2025, the Agreement on Cooperation between LLC "Operator of the Gas Transmission System of Ukraine" and PJSC "Gazprom" for the physical connection points between Russia and Ukraine, established on December 30, 2019, came to an end. Consequently, the transportation of natural gas from the entry point "Sudja" on Ukraine's eastern border to the exit points on the western and southern borders has been halted," the Ukrainian company stated.

The company added that they informed international partners about the termination of gas transit in the established manner.

"The Operator of the Gas Transmission System of Ukraine has proactively prepared the infrastructure to operate in a zero transit mode while ensuring reliable gas supply to Ukrainian consumers. The company's team is ready to work under the new conditions," emphasized the General Director of OGTSU, Dmitry Lippa.

In particular, OGTSU has agreed to increase guaranteed capacities to ensure the possibility of gas supplies both to Ukraine and through Ukraine to European consumers.

The company has also optimized its expenses: it reduced its own gas consumption and conducted optimization of assets that are not involved in the operation of the gas transmission system.

Reminder:

The suspension of the transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine on December 31 will have little impact on the strengthened European gas market.

The Ukrainian government is not conducting official negotiations to extend the transit of Russian gas after the current agreement expires.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev expressed confidence in the outcome of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine to ensure the continuation of Russian gas supplies through Ukraine to several European countries.

Ukraine does not intend to extend the gas transit contract with Russia, which expires at the end of 2024, but is ready to discuss the transit of gas from other suppliers through its gas transmission system if requested by Europe.
