Ukrainians are calling for the restoration of the country's nuclear status and the development of nuclear weapons. On the website of the Office of the President of Ukraine, three petitions were published on October 21.
5The petition for the restoration of the state's nuclear status, which was published on October 21, 2024, has garnered 35 votes out of the required 25,000.
"In light of the signatory countries of the Budapest Memorandum ignoring their commitments to ensure the security guarantees for Ukraine and its people, as well as the lack of clear and definite plans for restoring Ukraine's territorial integrity, this memorandum should be interpreted as a non-binding document. Necessary engineering and technical work should be conducted, and amendments to Ukraine's legislation should be prepared for withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which we do not possess and do not plan to utilize," the document states.
6The second petition with similar content was also published on October 21 of this year, and at the time of the article's release, it had received 927 votes.
7 8In another petition, it is noted that Ukraine should resume the development of nuclear weapons and increase its stockpile until joining NATO. After joining the Alliance, the production of nuclear weapons should cease; however, "the existing arsenal will remain in storage as a deterrent to ensure national security." This document was also published on October 21 and has received 52 votes.
9 0 1It is worth mentioning that earlier in the media, there were reports that the Ukrainian authorities are considering the possibility of restoring nuclear weapons stockpiles. Journalists, citing a Ukrainian official, noted that this would take only a few weeks.
