Sniffing out a cash-filled safe: Service dog Eva played a key role in solving a crime in Lviv region. (photo)

In Lviv region, a service dog assisted in locating a stolen safe. The German Shepherd Eva led law enforcement to the home of a suspect in one of the villages in the Stryi district, reports the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv region on January 28.

A resident of the village filed a police report regarding the theft of a safe containing cash in hryvnias and foreign currency from her home, according to the statement. The investigative team at the crime scene established that the suspect had broken into the house by forcing open a plastic window.

A dog handler with a service dog was involved in the case. The German Shepherd Eva picked up the scent inside the victim's house and led the officers to the gate of the home where a 24-year-old man lived. During the search of his residence, law enforcement discovered the stolen safe along with some of the money that had been stored in it. The police also seized gloves and other material evidence from the suspect.

The man was informed of his suspicion of theft under part 4 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. He faces up to eight years in prison. The suspect will be held in custody until the investigation is complete.
