Events in Kryvyi Rih led to a prolonged legal battle, which concluded on November 12, 2024, with a verdict. The central figure in this case was a man who claimed he was defending his parents from an aggressive neighbor. This was reported by "Vidomo" citing "Kryvyi Rih LIFE".
The conflict between the family and the neighbor had been ongoing for some time, reaching its peak in May 2021. The man's mother had repeatedly complained about systematic abuse and threats from the neighbor, which, according to the accused, prompted his actions. The accused decided to confront the neighbor personally and met him near their home. His demand for an explanation led the neighbor to attempt to flee. The accused pursued him, and during the chase, he claims to have pulled a hammer from his pocket.
The first blow with the hammer missed its target; however, the second strike to the head resulted in severe consequences. The victim lost consciousness and sustained serious injuries: a depressed comminuted fracture of the right parietal bone, a grade 1 concussion, head contusions, and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
The latter, as noted in medical reports, poses a life-threatening risk and falls under the category of serious bodily harm. The victim was hospitalized, where he received emergency medical care. Subsequently, he underwent a lengthy rehabilitation process, and the effects of the injury are likely to impact his health for a long time.
The accused was detained and taken into custody. Throughout the investigation and court hearings, he denied his guilt, claiming self-defense.
The legal proceedings lasted over three years. After thoroughly examining the case materials, witness testimonies, and medical reports regarding the nature and severity of the inflicted injuries, the Ternivka District Court of Kryvyi Rih found the man guilty of intentional infliction of serious bodily injury (part 1 of article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and sentenced him to five years and two months of imprisonment to be served in a correctional facility.
