In Lviv, the Technical Street has been renamed in honor of linguist and scholar Irina Farion, who tragically lost her life on July 19 due to a gunshot wound. The decision was made by the Lviv City Council during a session on November 28.
"There will be a street named after Irina Farion in Lviv — this is the resolution of the Lviv City Council session," the announcement states.
The council's secretary, Lyubomyr Melnychuk, clarified in a comment to "Suspilne Lviv" that the decision was supported by 43 deputies.
The renamed street, which stretches 133 meters, connects the main building of the National University "Lviv Polytechnic," where Farion worked for many years, with Ivan Franko Park.
"The former Technical Street, now Irina Farion Street, links Bandera Street from the student campus of Lviv Polytechnic to Ivan Franko Park and the area of the Ivan Franko National University," Melnychuk explained.
In July, the Lviv City Council endorsed the idea of renaming one of the city streets in memory of Irina Farion. On August 27, a memorial plaque was installed on the facade of the building where the linguist lived.
Irina Farion was killed on July 19 of this year. She was attacked with a firearm. The woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but the medical team was unable to save her.
A few days later, on July 25, law enforcement apprehended the suspect in the murder — 18-year-old VYacheslav Zinchenko, who is currently in custody without the right to bail.
It is worth noting that the first street named after Irina Farion in Ukraine appeared in Ivano-Frankivsk. Local deputies renamed Guard Street in honor of the linguist.
On October 6, it became known that at the front, Irina Farion's son-in-law — Vasyl Osoba — was killed. The man held the rank of senior soldier and served as a mortarman.
