The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine criticized the use of images of Ukrainians affected by the aggression of the Russian Federation in an advertisement by the Russian media outlet "Meduza," which is based in Latvia. The corresponding statement was published on the official Facebook page of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
It is reported that the advertisement, created by the Berlin agency Lure, featured Ukrainians who lost their families and homes. Spokesperson for the Ministry Georgiy Tikhiy called for the removal of "advertising content that exploits Ukrainian suffering" from all platforms and demanded an apology to the Ukrainians whose images were used in the video.
"Using our tragedy to evoke sympathy for Russians is a complete disgrace," the statement reads.
It should be noted that the advertising campaign of "Meduza" was previously reported by Viktoria Feshak from the Ukrainian organization "Veche Berlin." According to her, this video was shown in a Berlin cinema before a screening. The footage included scenes from the war, particularly the moment of the funeral of Yaroslav Bazilevich's wife and daughters, who lost his family due to a strike by the Russian Armed Forces on Lviv.
"I went to see Babygirl in Berlin and saw something I did not expect… I saw footage of explosions in Ukraine, Yaroslav Bazilevich at the funeral of his family, and other traumatic events of Ukrainians that are impossible to watch without feeling numb…," Viktoria Feshak wrote.
"Veche Berlin" condemned this video, stating that the advertisement by "Meduza" equates the suffering of Russian journalists in exile with the suffering of Ukrainians who have become victims of the war. The organization also commented on the use of Yaroslav Bazilevich's photo.
"Yaroslav was recently in Berlin. We got to know him better. He would never agree to an interview with Meduza and certainly would not allow his image to be used for this campaign," the representatives of "Veche Berlin" stated.
It is worth reminding that the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Dmytro Lubinets, criticized the UN report on human rights violations, stating that it equates Russia and Ukraine.
Additionally, it was reported that American actress and producer Reese Witherspoon and her book club faced a wave of criticism from Ukrainians due to their selection of a book about a Russian ballerina for the December readings.
