The United States is threatening to disconnect Ukraine from the Starlink satellite internet system unless Kyiv agrees to American terms regarding the rare earth minerals agreement. This was reported by Reuters citing its own sources.
"The extension of Ukraine's access to Starlink, owned by SpaceX, was raised during negotiations between American and Ukrainian officials after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the initial proposal from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent," the article states.
Journalists clarified that the same issue was discussed during a meeting between U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia Kurt Volker and Zelensky.
Reuters sources emphasized that U.S. negotiators are pressuring the Ukrainians, demanding access to Ukrainian mineral resources. One of the leverage tactics being considered is the potential disconnection of the country from Starlink.
During the meeting, Ukraine was informed that it would face an inevitable service shutdown if it did not sign the mineral agreement, one of the publication's sources highlighted.
Recall that Donald Trump stated that either Ukraine signs the rare earth minerals agreement or Kyiv will face "problems."
On February 21, "Suspilne" reported that Ukraine and the U.S. were working on a draft agreement regarding rare earth minerals, but some points in the document still raise questions.
