Law enforcement officials were able to prevent a terrorist attack that was set to occur in the center of Zhytomyr on February 28. The details were shared by the press service of the Security Service of Ukraine.
The detained agent, working on behalf of Russia, was preparing an attack in one of the city's busiest locations—near the "Alley of Glory to Heroes." He turned out to be a 16-year-old student from the Zhytomyr region, who was lured by promises of earnings from the enemy's intelligence service.
According to the SBU, the underage Ukrainian was supposed to leave a homemade explosive device (HED) hidden in a backpack on the alley. It was noted that the Russians planned to detonate the explosive together with the young man.
"Thus, the Russian intelligence service hoped to achieve two objectives: to carry out a bloody attack with numerous casualties and to eliminate their agent as an 'unnecessary witness,'" the agency explained.
The counterintelligence service uncovered the plot in advance and caught the student "red-handed" as he approached the attack site. It was reported that he received instructions from his handler and fabricated the HED himself. To conceal the explosive, the agent placed it in a pot, and to enhance the damage, he filled it with metal screws.
After preparing the explosive, the young man took a taxi to Zhytomyr instead of going to school. During the trip, he maintained constant communication with the Russian intelligence service. A mobile phone was connected to the HED. The enemy planned to activate the explosive by calling it when he received a "report" from the agent about his arrival.
The student was informed of suspicion regarding his preparation for the terrorist attack, and he faces up to 12 years in prison with property confiscation.
Recall that on February 28, emergency power outages were introduced in the Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions. "Ukrenergo" explained that this is a result of massive attacks by the Russian Armed Forces.
Representative of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Yevhen Yevlev, reported that a large-scale verification of passes allowing movement around the city during curfew will be conducted in Kyiv.
