Two residents of Transcarpathia planned to smuggle three men – residents of Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and Kyiv regions – across the Tisza River. To disguise their operation, they used a vehicle resembling an armored car, and the driver wore a police uniform. However, this plan was thwarted due to a traffic accident. This information was reported by "Vydomo" citing State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.
The organizers of the illegal smuggling scheme were uncovered by border guards from the "Tyachiv" unit. The two Transcarpathians intended to transport three conscripted men – residents of Donbas, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kyiv – into Romania via the Tisza River.
Border guards attempted to stop a "Volkswagen T5," which one of the smugglers was using to transport his clients to the border, at a checkpoint. However, the driver ignored the order and, performing a dangerous maneuver, sped off towards the village of Nyzhnya Apsha.
The border guards initiated a pursuit of the fleeing driver, who ultimately lost control and crashed into a concrete pole at high speed. He then exited the vehicle and tried to flee the scene.
One of his passengers, a resident of Donbas, sustained serious injuries as a result of the accident. An ambulance was called for the injured party. With multiple fractures and contusions, the man spent a day in intensive care. His health condition is now stable.
The border guards also summoned a police unit to the scene of the incident.
The driver in the police uniform was apprehended. According to the scheme of the disguised "law enforcement officer," the white vehicle with a green stripe, similar to those of armored cars, along with the driver in police attire, was intended to distract the attention of border guards at checkpoints. In this way, the dealer tried to deliver his clients to the border area.
In addition to the injured resident of Donetsk region, the car contained two Ukrainians – residents of Vysneve and Kryvyi Rih – who revealed that they planned to cross the border illegally. One of them paid $12,000 for the trip, while the other had his "ticket" purchased by his mother for €9,500. It remains unknown whether the third person managed to pay, as his condition does not allow for questioning.
During the inspection of the car's trunk, rescuers' vests and wetsuits were found, which the smugglers presumably intended to use to swim across the Tisza.
Soon, law enforcement identified another individual involved in this scheme to smuggle conscripted men.
He and the driver were detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code. They have already been informed of their suspicion of committing a crime under Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
