Ahanger’s life took a tragic turn in 1990 when her 17-year-old son, Javed Ahmad Ahanger, was forcibly disappeared by security forces during the peak of insurgency in Kashmir. This heart-wrenching loss became the catalyst for her lifelong commitment to fighting against enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in the region. In the midst of her personal grief, Ahanger resolved to transform her pain into a force for change, founding the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) in 1994.
